How to Take Care of a Newborn Cat: The Basics
It can be daunting taking care of a newborn cat, but with some simple steps and a bit of patience, you’ll have your new pet looking happy and healthy in no time. Here are the basics of how to take care of a new kitten:
-
Get them vaccinated. Make sure your cat is up-to-date on their vaccinations, especially against feline leukemia (FELV), rabies, and distemper. This will help keep them healthy should they get into any trouble while you’re away or when there’s an outbreak in the neighbourhood.
-
feed them kitten food. Kitten food is specially formulated to meet the needs of newborn cats and will give them all the nutrients they need to grow big and strong. You can find it at most pet stores or online retailers.
-
provide plenty of toys for playtime. A bored kitty is likely to develop behavioral issues such as scratching furniture or jumping out windows – so make sure they have plenty of things to do! Some good options include small balls, large rubber balls, sturdy cardboard boxes, old socks filled with sand or other small goodies, and even toy mice that can be hung from the top railings of a cat tree by threading a piece of playing cord through two holes on each side (or using suction cups). Just be sure not to overdo it; too many toys can lead to territorialism among cats…and who wants that?
