How to Take Care of a Dog with Diabetes: Tips for Owners and Their Pets
If you have a dog with diabetes, there are some things you need to know in order to take care of them both. Here are some tips on how to take care of your diabetic dog.
-
Keep their blood sugar levels under control. If their blood sugar is too high, it can cause serious health problems for your dog and even death. Make sure their blood sugar stays below 7 mmol/L (128 mg/dl). This means checking their blood sugar at least once a day and giving them medication if needed.
-
Feed them the right food. Dogs with diabetes require special food that contains controlled amounts of carbs and proteins. Ask your veterinarian or pet store staff about what kind of food is best suited for your diabetic dog. Try not to give them too much bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or other starchy foods as these will spike their blood sugar levels quickly. Instead offer them regular small meals instead so that their glucose levels stay under control throughout the day.
-
Monitor their exercise habits . Too much exercise can also spook dogs with diabetes into having high blood sugars due to the release of insulin during activity.. Exercise should be moderate-intensity only – nothing strenuous! -and always supervised by an adult who knows how to handle diabetic dogs properly..
-
Watch out for signs of illness . If your dog starts having any unusual symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or excessive thirst, they should see a vet immediately.. Diabetics are especially prone to developing infections so it’s important to keep an eye out for anything that might be wrong and get treatment right away if necessary..
